After this particular portrait session I started thinking about whether I prefer the subject looking at or away from the camera.  I concluded that  there is something nice about both. When the subject stares at the camera it feels as if he is somehow engaging and communicating with the audience in a direct way whereas when he is looking away there is a feeling that there is something else going on besides what we can see in the frame and a feeling that we are more of an onlooker capturing an expression or moment.
